Softball Recap: Derby Red Raiders vs. Naugatuck Greyhounds

Derby extended their losing streak to four on Wednesday, dropping their season record down to 3-9 in the process. They lost 14-2 to the Naugatuck Greyhounds. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Red Raiders of the 10-0 defeat they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in April of 2024.

Emma DeSanty made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went 2-for-3 with one run, one double, and one RBI.

As for Naugatuck, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 8-9. They might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won six matchups by ten runs or more this season.

On Naugatuck's side, Leah Chatfield made a big impact no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out 13 batters over six innings while giving up just two earned runs off four hits (and not a single walk). Chatfield has been consistent for a while: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in 15 consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, getting on base in three of her five plate appearances with four RBI, one run, and one double.

In other batting news, Carly Luchina was incredible, getting on base in all five of her plate appearances with three runs, one triple, and two RBI. Emily Landry also deserves some recognition as she scored her first run of the season.

Coming up, Derby will look to defend their home field on Tuesday against Oxford at 5:30 p.m. As for Naugatuck, they are taking a road trip to take on Seymour at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. The Greyhounds' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Wildcats have averaged an impressive 11.5 runs per game this season.
