Baseball Game Preview: Cotulla Cowboys vs. Hondo Owls

The Cotulla Cowboys will head out to challenge the Hondo Owls at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Cotulla will aim to continue their three-game streak of scoring more runs each match than the last.

Cotulla is headed in fresh off scoring the most runs they have all season. They blew past Dilley 25-10 on Tuesday. Perhaps unsurprisingly given the team's high-flying offense, the game also marked the team's biggest victory of the season.

Frank Torres made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out nine batters over four innings while giving up just two earned (and four unearned) runs off four hits. Those nine strikeouts gave him a new career-high. He was also stellar in the batter's box, scoring four runs and stealing three bases while getting on base in four of his six plate appearances.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Davyn Deltoro, who scored five runs and stole two bases while getting on base in three of his six plate appearances. Those five runs gave him a new career-high. Eli Renteria also deserves some recognition as he snagged his first stolen base of the season.

Cotulla always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .585. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.

Meanwhile, Hondo came tearing into Tuesday's game with four straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 6.3 runs), and they left with even more momentum. They beat the Mustangs by the very same score they won with in their prior game: 6-2.

Anthony Garza was incredible, going 1-for-2 with one home run and three RBI. Another player making a difference was Josiah Quintanilla, who scored two runs while going 2-for-3.

Hondo's win was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 11-4-1. The home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.7 runs over those games. As for Cotulla, their win ended a five-game drought on the road dating back to last season and puts them at 3-8-1.

Cotulla suffered a grim 7-1 defeat to Hondo in their previous meeting back in April of 2024. Can the Cowboys avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
