Football Recap: Newton Takes a Loss

If Newton was riding high fresh off their 42-8 takedown of Puckett last Friday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Tigers came up short against the Richton Rebels on Thursday, falling 32-8.

When it comes to explaining why Newton lost, don't look at Jymarques Holder. Despite the final result, he rushed for 47 yards and one TD.

B.J. Brown was his usual excellent self, rushing for 221 yards and a pair of touchdowns while picking up 11.6 yards per carry for Richton. Brown was no stranger to the big play, taking off on a dash that went for 52 yards.

Newton dropped their record down to 2-8 with the defeat, which was their fourth straight at home. Their recent woes sure aren't a result of their performance when it comes to yards per carry: they averaged an imposing 5.25 yards per carry in those games compared to only 3.28 in the others. As for Richton, the win got them back to even at 5-5.

The two teams are set to take part in some playoff action in their next matches. Newton is taking a road trip to square off against Heidelberg at 7:00 p.m. on the 7th. The Oilers will roll in looking for their sixth straight victory, something the Tigers surely won't give up without a fight. As for Richton, they will head out to challenge Bogue Chitto at 7:00 p.m. on the 7th. That game will pit two of the most dominant backs against one another: Brown and Jayden Poole.
