Midwest high school coaches select most overlooked 2021 football recruits

By Staff Report Apr 23, 2020, 1:30pm

Sixteen linebackers, 15 defensive linemen head top Midwestern players worthy of more college attention.

Video: Brandon Alexander highlights
Watch the Alliance dual-threat quarterback show off his skills in 2019.

Joe Burrow is expected to be the first pick in Thursday's NFL Draft. The quarterback, who played prep ball at Athens (The Plains, Ohio), has a well-chronicled path from high school to college and now the NFL. As Burrow realizes the payoff of his gridiron dreams, there's an Athens football player looking for his chance to shine at the next level.

Joey Moore, a rising senior quarterback and defensive back for the Bulldogs, is one of the 97 Midwest players nominated by a coach as someone who needs a look in our On to the Radar series, which seeks to highlight under-recruited athletes.

In the winter of 2019, MaxPreps reached out to high school coaches nationwide to find 100 of the most under-recruited players in the country. The response was well received.

With Class of 2021 players unable to attend showcases or spring football due to COVID-19 restrictions, we decided to move up this year's survey. The response was enormous.

In less than a week, more than 500 surveys were returned, highlighting why these players, almost all with little or no college attention, would help any FBS, FCS, Division II or Division III program.

We have broken the responses into regions, today featuring the Midwest, which includes high school players from Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Minnesota, Iowa and Missouri.

Check the published On to the Radar Northeast list and be on the lookout next week for the South and West regions. Additionally, MaxPreps football editor Zack Poff drops his Top 100 Under the Radar watch list on Friday.

Here are Class of 2021 Midwest players whose coaches think should be on someone's radar, including position, recommended college level, film and comments.

He was still a huge supporter of our team. ... During his sophomore season he took over at inside linebacker and had an outstanding year. As the year went on he became a dominate defender. ... His instincts athleticism and effort helped he become one of the best linebackers in the county. For this upcoming year, we are expecting Austin to start both ways for us and be a huge mismatch on offense. He has incredible hands and leaping ability, which will lead to many big plays. I feel Austin's best football is ahead of him as he learns the game more and grows into his frame. He has been working throughout the off season in the weight room and rehabbing his knee in order to get back out on the field this fall.
