Peoria (Ill.) football team rallied from 34 points down to defeat cross-town rival
Peoria Notre Dame (Peoria, Ill.) 82-80 on Friday night at Peoria Stadium.
According to the
Journal Star, the game featured 1,263 yards of offense and broke the Illinois High School Association scoring record by one point. Last season, Deer Creek-Mackinaw beat Chicago Hope Academy 91-70 in the playoffs.
Friday's game was decided when
Fred Dixson scored on a 10-yard overtime touchdown and
Geno Hess converted the winning two-point conversion. The game-winner came after Notre Dame scored in OT but was stopped on its two-point conversion try.
The Lions trailed 42-8 in the first half, but fought back behind Dixson (10 rushes, 160 yards, four touchdowns), Hess (11 carries, 154 yards, two touchdowns) and quarterback
Coran Taylor, who rushed for 115 yards, threw for 188 and accounted for four touchdowns and six two-point conversions.
Notre Dame was led by
Logan Cover, who rushed 22 times for 319 yards and two TDs, and
Dominic Lefante who ran for 124 yards on 19 carries and five touchdowns. Lefante hurt his shoulder early in the third quarter and never returned.
"Eighty points? Seriously that's painful to watch," winning coach Tim Thornton told the Journal Star. "But our offense was going to bring us back. We stood there on the sideline and everyone knew it."
