Baseball Recap: El Capitan Comes Up Short

El Capitan extended their losing streak to three on Tuesday, dropping their season record down to 7-10 in the process. They were two runs away from ending the streak, but they lost a 3-1 heartbreaker at the hands of the Helix Highlanders. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest loss the Vaqueros have suffered against the Highlanders since April 4, 2017.

El Capitan saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Matthew Eckis, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with one run. Another was Kasen Baker, who went 2-for-5 with one stolen base and one double.

As for Helix, their victory was their first in the league, bumping their league record up to 1-2 and their overall record up to 9-9. The win continues a trend for them in their matchups with El Capitan: they've now won five in a row.

On Helix's side, Maddox Richardson tossed a big game, not allowing a single earned run and allowing only two hits over 5.2 innings pitched. Richardson also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because the Highlanders are undefeated when he allows at most one earned run, but 6-9 otherwise.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Alex Carbajal, who went 2-for-4 with one triple, two RBI, and one double. That triple was his first of the season. Jake Johnson was another key player, going 3-for-5 with two doubles and one run.

While El Capitan had to take the loss, they won't have to wait long to give it another shot: the pair's next game is a rematch scheduled at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday.
