Baseball Recap: Zeeland West Comes Up Short

Zeeland West extended their losing streak to three on Saturday, dropping their season record down to 1-8 in the process. They lost 7-1 to the Byron Center Bulldogs. If the Dux were looking for revenge after losing 12-2 to the Bulldogs when the teams met back in May of 2024, then they'll just have to keep looking.

As for Byron Center, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 7-2. They might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won five contests by six runs or more this season.

For Byron Center's part, Connor Devito spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered only one earned run on six hits. Devito has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than one earned run any time he's pitched this season.

At the plate, Byron Center let Drew Pojeski and Luke Laska run wild. Pojeski went 2-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI, while Laska went a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs, one stolen base, and one RBI. Laska is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as he's now snagged at least one in each of the last four games he's played. Alex Wauben was another key player, going 1-for-2 with three RBI and one stolen base.

The teams didn't have to wait long for a rematch: Byron Center beat Zeeland West by a score of 10-4 later that day.
