Basketball Recap: Washburn Pirates vs. Cosby Eagles
If the Washburn Pirates were feeling good off their 77-42 takedown of the White Academy Knights last Tuesday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. Washburn was the victim of a tough 80-60 loss at the hands of the Eagles on Friday. Washburn has struggled against the Eagles recently, as their matchup on Friday was their fourth consecutive lost matchup.
Washburn's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Billy Jo Wolfenbarger, who scored 16 points along with two steals. Matthew Harville was another key contributor, scoring 14 points along with five steals.
Washburn struggled to get the ball back on offense and finished the game with only an offensive rebound. That's the fewest offensive rebounds they've managed all season.
Washburn has traveled a rocky road recently having lost nine of their last ten games, which put a noticeable dent in their 4-15 record this season. As for Cosby, their victory was their fifth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 14-7.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Washburn will play host again and welcome the Buffaloes, where tip off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. on Monday. West Greene has now lost 13 straight, and the team is hunting for their first win since November 27. As for Cosby, they will look to defend their home court on Tuesday against the Fighting Cocks at 8:00 p.m. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are closely ranked in Tennessee (Cocke County is ranked 231st, while the Eagles are ranked 238th).
