Football Recap: Keys Comes Up Short

After flying high against Colcord last Friday, Keys came back down to earth. The Cougars were beaten by the Salina Wildcats 56-25 on Friday. The Cougars were not able to make up for their defeat to the Wildcats from their previous meeting back in October of 2024.

Despite the loss, Keys saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Ryder Davis rushed for 106 yards and a pair of TDs on only ten carries. Speaking of playmakers, who could forget Treveon Guthrie, who went all the way with a kickoff return for a touchdown.

Keys didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off three passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Jacob Kirk and Johnny Coombs. Coombs got in on the action too, converting a pick into a touchdown.

Keys' defeat was their first in the district, dropping their district record down to 2-1 and their overall record down to 3-3. As for Salina, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 5-1.

Looking ahead, Keys will challenge Chelsea at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. The Cougars will be up against the Dragons' rather soft defense (which has allowed 26 points per contest), so fans could be in store for a big offensive performance. As for Salina, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Wyandotte at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. The Wildcats will need to watch out since the Bears have now posted at least 31 points in their last three games.
