Softball Preview: Westwood Redhawks vs. Lugoff-Elgin Demons
For the second straight game, Westwood will face off against Lugoff-Elgin. The Redhawks will be playing in front of their home fans against the Demons at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday.
Westwood easily dispatched Spring Valley on Thursday, but unfortunately both the margin and the ultimate result were a different story in this one. The Redhawks fell just short of Lugoff-Elgin by a score of 10-8 on Tuesday.
For Lugoff-Elgin's part, Cassie Merriweather made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She pitched four innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off three hits. Merriweather was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-3 with two RBI and one double. Those two RBI gave her a new career-high.
In other batting news, Carley Bell was incredible, firing off two home runs and three RBI while getting on base in all four of her plate appearances. The dominant performance also gave her a new career-high in runs (two). Another player making a difference was Emaree Ray, who scored two runs while going 2-for-3.
Lugoff-Elgin was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .469. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .457 or higher in four consecutive contests.
Lugoff-Elgin's victory bumped their record up to 7-11. As for Westwood, their loss dropped their record down to 6-13.
