Softball Game Preview: Newport Cubs vs. Philomath Warriors

The Newport Cubs will head out on the road to face off against the Philomath Warriors at 5:00 p.m. on Monday. Given that the two teams suffered a loss in their last games, they both have a little extra motivation heading into this game.

On Thursday, Newport didn't have quite enough to beat Sweet Home and fell 5-4. The Cubs have struggled against the Huskies recently, as the game was their fourth consecutive lost meeting.

Olivia Greenawald spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and four unearned) runs on six hits and racked up seven Ks.

At the plate, Newport saw six different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Ashtyn Black, who went 1-for-3 with one run and one double. Baby Garrett also deserves some recognition as she hit her first triple of the season.

Cascade hit Philomath with a six-run fifth inning on Thursday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. The Warriors lost 13-3 to the Cougars. The Warriors have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

Newport's loss dropped their record down to 3-8. As for Philomath, their defeat dropped their record down to 5-5.

Everything went Newport's way against Philomath in their previous matchup back in April of 2023, as Newport made off with a 17-6 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Cubs since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
