Preview: Southwest Dragons vs. Cigarroa Toros
Southwest is 3-0 against Cigarroa since November of 2020, and they'll have a chance to extend that success on Thursday. The Southwest Dragons will head out on the road to face off against the Cigarroa Toros at 7:00 p.m. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Southwest has four straight wins, Cigarroa has eight straight defeats), but none of that matters once you're on the field.
After only 12 points in their last matchup, Southwest made sure to put some points up on the board against South San Antonio on Friday. Southwest blew past South San Antonio 35-7 at home. The score at the end of the third wound up being the final score as Southwest just coasted through the last quarter.
Southwest can attribute much of their success to Aazeryuan Voss, who rushed for 124 yards and a touchdown. Tyson Deen was in the mix too, providing Southwest with three touchdowns.
Meanwhile, Cigarroa was beaten by Nixon 42-7 on Friday. Cigarroa was in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 28-0.
Southwest's win was their fourth straight at home, bumping their overall record up to 7-1. That said, the team wasn't facing the toughest opposition over that stretch, as it included 1-7 Winn and 2-7 South San Antonio (their opponents had an average overall winning percentage of 33.7% over those games). As for Cigarroa, their loss dropped their record down to 0-8.
Southwest strolled past Cigarroa when the teams last played back in October of 2022 by a score of 28-14. The rematch might be a little tougher for Southwest since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
