Basketball Recap: Weslaco Comes Up Short

Weslaco easily dispatched Pharr-San Juan-Alamo last Friday, but unfortunately both the margin and the ultimate result were a different story in this one. The Weslaco Panthers fell just short of the Edinburg Bobcats by a score of 56-53 on Tuesday. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest loss the Panthers have suffered since December 8, 2023.

Despite the loss, Weslaco still got an impressive performance from Pete Cantu, who dropped a double-double on 17 points and 16 boards. With that strong performance, Cantu is now averaging an impressive 8.3 rebounds per game. Jeremiah Castillo was another key player, putting up 13 points and five boards.

Axel Navarro was his usual excellent self, going 6 for 12 on his way to 15 points and seven assists for Edinburg. Another player making a difference was Brayan Martinez, who went 5 of 11 en route to 14 points.

Weslaco's defeat dropped their record down to 17-8. As for Edinburg, they pushed their record up to 21-8 with the victory, which was their fifth straight at home.

A feisty cat fight is on tap when the Weslaco Panthers take on the Economedes Jaguars at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Weslaco is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 57.6 points per game this season. As for Edinburg, they will challenge Edinburg North at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. One thing working in Edinburg's favor is that they have posted at least 55 points in their last five games.
