Volleyball Recap: Eryka Gudmunds Leads a Balanced Effort to Beat Pioneer Valley

Pioneer Valley came into Tuesday's match looking for another win against Orcutt Academy, but Larissa Lorencz wouldn't allow it. The Spartans came out on top in a nail-biter against the Panthers on Tuesday, sneaking past 3-2 with plenty of help from Lorencz, who had 38 digs. She has been hot, having posted ten or more digs the last seven times she's played.

Orcutt Academy wouldn't go down easily and took Pioneer Valley into a fifth set where they got it done with a two-point win. Once all was said and done, the final score wound up at 24-26, 25-21, 25-21, 25-27, 17-15.

Orcutt Academy's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Eryka Gudmunds, who hit 93.5% for 29 kills and five digs, five blocks, and three aces. Those 29 kills gave Gudmunds a new career-high. Whitney Clevenger also deserves some recognition as she posted her first assist of the season.

Orcutt Academy's win bumped their record up to 7-8. As for Pioneer Valley, they are on a five-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 2-16.

Orcutt Academy has already played their next contest, a 3-2 defeat against Righetti on the 9th. As for Pioneer Valley, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next matchup, a 3-0 loss against Cabrillo on the 9th.
