The Triton Hawks will square off against the Harnett Central Trojans at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Triton is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 11.6 runs per game this season.
Triton fought the good fight in their extra-innings match against Pine Forest on Friday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Trojans by a score of 7-6. The Hawks' loss signaled the end of their four-game winning streak.
Sydney Bradham stepped up to lead a balanced group of hitters: she got no hits from her three at bats. She is also on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as she's now snagged at least one in each of the last four games she's played. Another player making a difference was Kelsey Matthews, who scored two runs and stole two bases while getting on base in two of her four plate appearances.
Meanwhile, Harnett Central had already won three in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 16.3 runs) and they went ahead and made it four on Thursday. They were the clear victors by a 17-1 margin over the Golden Bulls. The Trojans might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won ten contests by eight runs or more this season.
Molly Champion made a splash no matter where she played. On the mound, she didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits over four innings pitched. Champion was also big at the plate, scoring a run and stealing two bases while going 3-for-4. Those two stolen bases gave her a new career-high.
In other batting news, Haleigh Moss was incredible, scoring three runs and stealing five bases while going 4-for-4. Those five stolen bases gave her a new career-high. Lauren Faulkner was another key player, scoring four runs and stealing a base while going 2-for-3.
Triton's defeat was their first in the conference, dropping their conference record down to 9-1 and their overall record down to 13-3. As for Harnett Central, their win bumped their record up to 11-4.
Tuesday's game will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Triton hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .316. However, it's not like Harnett Central struggles in that department as they've averaged .471. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Triton came out on top in a nail-biter against Harnett Central in their previous meeting back in May of 2024, sneaking past 8-6. Do the Hawks have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Trojans turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
