Basketball Recap: Brandon Cherry Key Part of a Team Effort in Aces Win

While Holmes didn't have the best season last year (they finished 9-14), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past. They secured a 61-56 W over the Currituck County Knights on Saturday. For the Aces, this counts as revenge for the 64-47 victory the Knights walked away with the last time they faced one another back in February of 2024.

Holmes' win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Brandon Cherry, who went 7 for 12 en route to 16 points and four steals. Cherry continues to improve, besting his previous point total in each of the last three games he's played. Zach Walston was another key player, putting up 13 points.

Holmes smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 17 offensive rebounds. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their offensive board total in three consecutive matches.

Currituck County's defeat shouldn't obscure the performances of Tristan Peterson, who went 8 of 18 on his way to 22 points in addition to eight boards and five steals, and Jamie Dance, who went 9 for 20 en route to 20 points and seven rebounds. Peterson is becoming a predictor of Currituck County's success: when he posts at least three steals the team is 8-2 (and 2-3 when he doesn't). Another player making a difference was Hunter Hilton, who posted four points and five boards.

Holmes moved to 7-4 with that victory, which also ended their three-game losing streak. As for Currituck County, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 10-5.

Holmes has already played their next contest, a 58-43 loss against Lakeland on the 20th. As for Currituck County, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next game, a 67-55 defeat against Grassfield on the 20th.
