Baseball Game Preview: Coxsackie-Athens Riverhawks vs. Watervliet Cannoneers

Coxsackie-Athens is a perfect 3-0 against Watervliet since April of 2022 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Friday. The Riverhawks will square off against the Cannoneers at 4:30 p.m. Coxsackie-Athens will be strutting in after a win while Watervliet will be coming in after a loss.

Coxsackie-Athens barely beat Johnstown the last time the pair played, but that sure wasn't the case this time around. The Riverhawks blew past the Sir Bills 8-1 on Tuesday. The Riverhawks haven't had any issues with the Sir Bills recently, as the game was their fourth consecutive victory against them.

Alex Slater made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, keeping things locked down with no earned runs or hits over four innings pitched. Slater was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run while going 1-for-3.

In other batting news, Logan Weinstein and CJ VanAlphen did most of the damage at the plate: Weinstein scored two runs and stole a base while going 1-for-3, while VanAlphen scored two runs and stole two bases while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances. Jackson Purdy was another key player, scoring a run while going 1-for-3.

Meanwhile, Watervliet had to start their season on the road on Tuesday, and it wasn't the start they were hoping for. They fell just short of Berne-Knox-Westerlo by a score of 5-4.

Coxsackie-Athens took their win against Watervliet in their previous meeting back in May of 2024 by a conclusive 12-0 score. Will the Riverhawks repeat their success, or do the Cannoneers have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
