Avon, Carroll fall in MaxPreps Xcellent 25 National Volleyball Rankings

Avon's perfect season comes to an end with a loss to Penn; Carroll drops out of Top 50 with loss to Grapevine.

Playoff upsets dropped a pair of teams out of the Top 5 of the MaxPreps Xcellent 25 National Volleyball Rankings presented by the Army National Guard, as previously unbeaten Avon (Ind.) and one-loss Carroll (Southlake, Texas) both fell last week.

Avon was looking at a possible unbeaten season after it won its first 39 matches and reached the Indiana Class 4A state championship match. But Penn, which had just one loss to Muncie Burris, upended the Orioles in four games. The loss drops Avon down to No. 25 while Penn moves into the Xcellent 25 at No. 24.

Both Avon and Penn are ranked behind three other Indiana teams. Wapahani, which ended Muncie Burris' 14-year reign as the top team in Class 2A, enters the rankings at No. 22 after winning a state title while Muncie Burris re-enters the rankings at No. 23. The Owls' only losses this year were to three state champions: Assumption (Louisville, Ky.), Yorktown (Ind.) and Wapahani. Yorktown is the other Indiana team, moving up to No. 16.

Carroll, meanwhile, lost to Grapevine in the area finals of the Texas 5A state playoffs. The Dragons, at 42-1, were the top-ranked team in the Texas Girls Coaches Association state rankings for most of the season, but had to drop out of the Top 50 entirely due to the loss.
