The Deer Valley Skyhawks are taking a road trip to square off against the Poston Butte Broncos at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The two teams are strolling into their games after big wins in their previous games.
Deer Valley had to skate by with only a two-run margin when they last took the field, which might have inspired the ten-run drubbing they dealt ALA - Gilbert North on Tuesday. Deer Valley's pitcher stepped up to hand ALA - Gilbert North a 10-0 shutout. The high-flying hitting performance was a huge turnaround for the Skyhawks considering their two-run performance the match before.
Adyson Ordway made a splash no matter where she played. On the mound, she didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out ten over five innings pitched. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks any time she's pitched this season. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBI. That's the most doubles she has posted since back in February of 2024.
In other batting news, Deer Valley let Priscilla Lopez and Leila Hermosillo run wild. Lopez scored a run and stole a base while going 3-for-4, while Hermosillo scored two runs and stole a base while getting on base in three of her four plate appearances. What's more, Lopez posted two RBI, the most she's had since back in April of 2024. Kaitlin Creley also deserves some recognition as she snagged her first stolen base of the season.
Deer Valley always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .600. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as ALA - Gilbert North only posted an OBP of .118.
Meanwhile, Poston Butte won against Peoria on Thursday with 19 runs and they decided to stick to that run total again on Monday. Poston Butte beat Desert Sunrise by the very same score they won with in their prior game: 19-1. The win was familiar territory for the Broncos, who have now won three contests in a row.
Brooklyn Trejo was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single hit and allowed only one earned run while striking out 13 over five innings pitched. Trejo was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 1-for-3.
In other batting news, Brylee Litviak and Aliyah Madrid did most of the damage at the plate: Litviak went 3-for-4 with two triples, three runs, and four RBI, while Madrid went a perfect 3-for-3 with four RBI, two runs, and two doubles. Kimberly Westover was another key player, scoring two runs while going 2-for-4.
The victory got Poston Butte back to even at 3-3. As for Deer Valley, their record is now 7-2-1.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Wednesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Deer Valley has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.9 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Poston Butte struggles in that department as they've been averaging 7 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Deer Valley skirted past Poston Butte 1-0 in their previous matchup back in April of 2024. The rematch might be a little tougher for Deer Valley since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
