Softball Recap: Basic Wins High-Profile Match Against Southeast Career Tech

Basic faced Southeast Career Tech in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Wednesday. Basic sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with an 8-6 win over Southeast Career Tech. The Wolves have seen this before: they got the W the last time they saw the Roadrunners, too.

Melanie Hughes spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered six runs (all of which were unearned) on two hits and racked up seven Ks.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Samantha Marquez, who scored three runs and stole four bases while going 1-for-4. Those four stolen bases gave her a new career-high. Aubrey Kilar also deserves some recognition as she hit her first double of the season.

Basic pushed their record up to 5-6 with the victory, which was their third straight on the road. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.7 runs over those games. As for Southeast Career Tech, they now have a losing record of 6-7.

Looking ahead, Basic will welcome Green Valley at 3:30 p.m. on Friday. As for Southeast Career Tech, they will head out to square off against Foothill at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The game will give Southeast Career Tech their first taste of in-conference action this season.
