Baseball Recap: Rantoul Wins Going Away Against Clinton

Rantoul lost a heartbreaker the last time they played Clinton, but it's fair to say they got their revenge given the result of Tuesday's game. The Eagles were the clear victors by an 8-2 margin over the Maroons on Tuesday. The Eagles not only won on Tuesday, but they posted their biggest win since March 24th (when they won 10-0).

Dalton Gernentz made a big impact no matter where he played. He tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks in eight consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two runs and one RBI. Rantoul is undefeated when Gernentz posts two or more runs, but 4-8 otherwise.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Dayton Wilson, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI. Those three hits gave him a new career-high. Mason Ihnen was another key player, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with one stolen base and one run.

Rantoul kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Clinton only managed four hits.

The victory made it two in a row for Rantoul and bumps their season record up to 7-8. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 7.5 runs over those games. As for Clinton, they now also have a losing record of 7-8.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Rantoul will venture away from home to challenge Urbana at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. As for Clinton, they will head out to face off against Bloomington Central Catholic at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
