The Rockville Rams will head out on the road to challenge the Cromwell/Portland Panthers at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. Rockville is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 43.6 points per game this season.
Last Saturday, Rockville was just a hair shy of victory and fell 22-21 to CREC [Computer Science and Engineering/Academy]. The game marked the Rams' lowest-scoring matchup so far this season.
Rockville's defeat shouldn't obscure the performances of Will Davis Jr., who picked up 102 receiving yards and a pair of TDs, and Darren Ghostlaw, who threw for 151 yards and two touchdowns on only 11 passes. Davis Jr. got the majority of those receiving yards when he pulled down a pass and took off for a gain of 55 yards.
Meanwhile, Cromwell/Portland put another one in the bag on Friday to keep their perfect season alive. They blew past Sports & Medical Sciences Academy/Bulkeley/Classical Magnet, posting a 51-18 win. Given the Panthers' advantage in MaxPreps' Connecticut football rankings (they are ranked 50th, while the Tigerhawks are ranked 137th) , the win wasn't entirely unexpected.
Cromwell/Portland's win came from a few key players Rockville will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Tyler Cipolla, who rushed for 159 yards and one score on only six carries. With that strong performance, he is now averaging an impressive 102.2 rushing yards per game. The team also got some help courtesy of Michael Sitaro Jr., who threw for 70 yards and three TDs.
Cromwell/Portland was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 274 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 173 rushing yards in five consecutive contests.
Cromwell/Portland didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off three passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Cipolla and Zhyair Brown. Cipolla got in on the action too, converting a pick into a touchdown.
Cromwell/Portland's victory bumped their record up to 8-0. As for Rockville, their loss was their first of the season and makes their record 6-1.
Friday's game might be decided on the ground. Rockville has been excellent on the ground this season, having averaged 189.3 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Cromwell/Portland struggles in that department as they've been averaging 254.4 rushing yards. There's a good chance Friday's matchup turns into a tough fight on the ground.
Rockville couldn't quite get it done against Cromwell/Portland in their previous meeting back in November of 2024 as they fell 29-19. Can the Rams avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
