High school football rankings: Santa Margarita climbs in this week's MaxPreps Top 25 after win over Mater Dei

Santa Margarita (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) added another marquee win to its resume Friday night with a 7-6 victory over Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.). The Eagles, who also handed No. 5 Centennial (Corona, Calif.) its only loss of the season in August, moved up seven spots to No. 9 in this week's MaxPreps Top 25 high school football rankings.

Four-star USC commit Trent Mosley returned to action after missing the last five games and scored the go-ahead touchdown from one-yard out with 5:06 left in the fourth quarter to give Santa Margarita a 7-6 lead. The Eagles snapped an 11-game losing streak against Mater Dei and improved to 5-2 with No. 1 St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.) looming. Top-ranked Bosco handed Orange Lutheran (Orange, Calif.) its first shutout loss since 2020 with a 48-0 win. The Braves have outscored their first seven opponents 327-62. Head coach Jason Negro's squad has won 15 in a row dating back to 2011 against Santa Margarita.

In Georgia, No. 3 Grayson (Loganville) continued its dominant stretch with a 58-10 win over Rockdale County (Conyers) to improve to 8-0. The defending AAAAAA state champs have scored at least 50 points in four of their last five games. Deuce Smith took over at quarterback after four-star Travis Burgess suffered a torn ACL in the second game of the season and has thrown for 17 touchdowns over his last four games.

In Oklahoma, No. 20 Bixby continued to pile up points in a 64-7 win over Edmond North (Edmond, Okla.). The seven-time defending state champs are averaging 62.2 points per game this season. Senior quarterback Carson Kirby is completing 75.2 percent of his pass attempts for 1,473 yards and 21 touchdowns against just one interception. He has added 178 yards on the ground with two more scores.
