Basketball Game Preview: Avery County Vikings vs. McDowell Titans

Avery County is on a ten-game streak of home wins (dating back to last season), while McDowell is on a three-game streak of away wins: one of those streaks is about to end. The Avery County Vikings will host the McDowell Titans at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday. Avery County is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 58 points per game this season.

Avery County picked up another tournament win on Friday. They walked away with a 47-37 win over Smoky Mountain. Given the Vikings' advantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 93rd, while the Mustangs are ranked 359th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Avery County found their leader in sophomore Marley Jones, who went 7 of 15 on her way to 22 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Kylie Holtsclaw, who posted four points.

Avery County smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with ten offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive boards in four consecutive games.

Meanwhile, McDowell was able to grind out a solid victory over Weddington on Monday, taking the game 58-47.

McDowell's win bumped their record up to 11-0. As for Avery County, they have been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six contests, which provided a nice bump to their 9-2 record this season.
