Softball Recap: Newport Comes Up Short

Newport extended their losing streak to nine on Friday, dropping their season record down to 0-9 in the process. They lost 22-5 to the Dayton Greendevils. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Wildcats of the 17-0 defeat they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in April of 2024.

As for Dayton, with the victory, they broke their six-game losing streak and moved their record to 3-6. That 17 run margin sets a new team best for them this season.

For Dayton's part, McKenzie Sullivan made a splash no matter where she played. She pitched three innings while giving up no earned runs off three hits. Sullivan was even better at the plate, going a perfect 3-for-3 with two stolen bases, three runs, and one triple. That's the most runs she has posted since back in May of 2024.

In other batting news, Emily Hall was a standout: she got on base in all four of her plate appearances with three stolen bases, three runs, and one RBI. That's the most stolen bases she has posted since back in April of 2024. Brooklynn Moreno was another key player, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with two stolen bases and three runs.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Newport will take on Highlands at 5:00 p.m. on Monday. The Bluebirds will roll in looking for their ninth straight win, something the Wildcats surely won't give up without a fight. As for Dayton, they will face off against Nicholas County at 6:00 p.m. on Monday.
