Basketball Recap: Rocky Mount Prep Takes a Loss

It was a proper cat-fight when Rocky Mount Prep faced off against SouthWest Edgecombe on Friday. The Rocky Mount Prep Jaguars fell 79-67 to the SouthWest Edgecombe Cougars. While losing is never fun, the Jaguars can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 466th, while the Cougars are ranked 103rd).

When it comes to explaining why Rocky Mount Prep lost, don't look at Rashyd Johnson. Despite the final result, he posted 23 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Qualique Jones, who had 11 points.

SouthWest Edgecombe's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Alijah Lassiter led the charge by going 6 of 9 on his way to 18 points and seven rebounds. Those 18 points gave Lassiter a new career-high. Justin Bridgers was another key player, dropping a double-double on 18 points and 11 rebounds.

Rocky Mount Prep is on a four-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 2-5. As for SouthWest Edgecombe, the victory (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 7-2.

Rocky Mount Prep wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next contest, an 82-42 defeat against Northwest Halifax on the 3rd. As for SouthWest Edgecombe, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 67-33 win against North Edgecombe on the 28th.
