Football Recap: Southwest Comes Up Short

Southwest fell victim to Varela and their airtight defense on Thursday. They lost 25-0 to the Vipers. While losing is never fun, the Eagles can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Florida football rankings (they are ranked 377th, while the Vipers are ranked 127th).

Varela found their leader in freshman Angelyn Molina, who threw for 220 yards and two TDs while picking up 11.0 yards per attempt. Molina's passing game has become a key predictor of the Vipers' success: the team is undefeated when her passer rating is 100 or higher, but only 2-3 otherwise.

Southwest dropped their record down to 0-7 with the loss, which was their fifth straight on the road. As for Varela, the win (which was their sixth in a row) raised their record to 7-3.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Southwest will host Coral Reef at 3:30 p.m. on Monday. The Eagles are facing the Barracudas at the right time seeing as the Barracudas are stuck on a seven-game losing streak. As for Varela, they will welcome JC Bermudez Doral at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The Vipers will be up against the Thunder's rather soft defense (which has allowed 35.4 points per match), so fans could be in store for a big offensive performance.
