Recap: Vanguard Knights vs. Lake Weir Hurricanes
Winning is just a little bit easier when you outrebound your opponent 18 to 9 on the offensive boards, a fact the Vanguard Knights proved on Wednesday. They enjoyed a cozy 60-43 win over Lake Weir. Given Vanguard's advantage in MaxPreps' Florida basketball rankings (they are ranked 218th, while Lake Weir is ranked 521st), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Vanguard's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Johnardo Turner led the charge by scoring 12 points along with 8 rebounds and 5 steals. Turner is absolutely dominating the steal category: he's posted at least two every time he's taken the court this season. Another player making a difference was Dylan Harris, who scored 5 points along with 14 rebounds and 3 blocks.
Lake Weir's lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Amar Young, who scored 11 points along with 5 rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Amari Kiner, who scored 11 points along with 7 rebounds.
Vanguard now has a winning record of 2-1. As for Lake Weir, their loss was their third straight on the road, which bumped their record down to 1-3.
Vanguard will face off against Wekiva at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday. As for Lake Weir, they will be playing at home against North Marion at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Hopefully North Marion focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 15 on Tuesday.
