Recap: St. John XXIII Lions vs. Kelly Catholic Bulldogs
This season hasn't been kind to The St. John XXIII Lions, who are still winless after their eighth game. They were dealt a 41-0 defeat at the hands of Kelly Catholic on Friday. The loss unfortunately continues a disappointing trend for St. John XXIII in their matchups with Kelly Catholic: they've now lost three in a row.
Anthony Mazzola looked great while leading his team to the win, throwing for 307 yards and five touchdowns while picking up 11.8 yards per attempt. Jacob Brocato was another key contributor, picking up 102 receiving yards and a touchdown.
Kelly Catholic's defense stepped up as well, laying out the QB four times. Leading the way was Kaden Wickland and his three sacks.
St. John XXIII's defeat was their eighth straight at home (dating back to last season), which dropped their overall record down to 0-8. Admittedly, the team was facing some tough opposition over that stretch, including 7-2 Houston Christian and 10-4 Fort Bend Christian Academy (their opponents had an average overall winning percentage of 58.3% over those games). As for Kelly Catholic, their victory bumped their record up to 3-5.
St. John XXIII will head out on the road to face off against Fort Bend Christian Academy at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Fort Bend Christian Academy presents a significant challenge as they come into the match much higher ranked than St. John XXIII in Texas (Fort Bend Christian Academy is ranked 507th, while St. John XXIII is ranked 1045th). As for Kelly Catholic, they will be playing at home against Second Baptist at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Second Baptist is coming into the contest hot, having won their last three games.
