Softball Game Preview: Grayson County Cougars vs. Metcalfe County Hornets

The Grayson County Cougars will face off against the Metcalfe County Hornets at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. The two teams each escaped (but just barely!) with wins against their previous opponents.

Grayson County took a six-run defeat the last time they faced off against North Hardin, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. The Cougars came out on top in a nail-biter against the Trojans on Tuesday, sneaking past 7-5. The win was a breath of fresh air for the Cougars as it put an end to their five-game losing streak.

Ellie Bratcher was a major factor no matter where she played. She struck out ten batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned (and four unearned) runs off eight hits (and not a single walk). Those ten strikeouts gave her a new career-high. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run.

In other batting news, Elizabeth Haycraft and Jacie Alexander did most of the damage at the plate: Haycraft went 1-for-4 with four RBI and one double, while Alexander went a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs and one RBI. Those two runs gave Alexander a new career-high.

Grayson County kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 13 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least eight hits in three consecutive contests.

Meanwhile, Metcalfe County posted their closest victory since March 30th on Tuesday. They skirted past Caverna 4-3.

Rory Bragg spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered three runs (all of which were unearned) on six hits and racked up 11 Ks. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in three consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Metcalfe County saw six different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Emma Groce, who went 1-for-3 with one run and one double.

Metcalfe County's win bumped their record up to 7-17. As for Grayson County, their victory bumped their record up to 8-14.
