Baseball Recap: Fort Jennings Comes Up Short

Fort Jennings has relied on a stalwart pitchers averaging 3.79 runs allowed per game, but that average took a hit on Monday. They fell just short of the Ottoville Big Green by a score of 13-12. That's two games in a row now that the Musketeers have lost by just one run.

Sam Dube put in work while hitting and pitching. He tossed two innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-low in walks (zero). He was also big at the plate, earning one RBI, one run, and one stolen base.

In other batting news, Calvin Menke made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and went 1-for-4 with one home run, two runs, and two RBI. He has become a key player for Fort Jennings: the team is 9-1 when he posts at least two runs, but 3-6 otherwise. Brandt Menke was another key player, going 2-for-4 with one run, one double, and one RBI.

This is the second loss in a row for Fort Jennings and nudges their season record down to 12-7. Even worse, they were so close both times: the losses came by an average of only one runs. As for Ottoville, they moved to 3-15 with that victory, which also ended their eight-game losing streak.

We've got plenty of inter-conference action coming up soon. Fort Jennings is set to challenge their familiar foe Miller City at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (the Musketeers 3.8, the Wildcats 2.9) so any runs scored will be well earned. Meanwhile, Ottoville will square off against rival Kalida at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
