Softball Game Preview: Cypress Centurions vs. Mayfair Monsoons

The Cypress Centurions will head out to challenge the Mayfair Monsoons at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday. The last five games Cypress has played have been within two runs, so don't be surprised if it's a close one.

Cypress took a seven-run loss the last time they faced off against Pacifica, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. The Centurions came out on top against the Mariners on Tuesday by a score of 4-2 (the very same score they lost by in their prior game). The victory was some much needed relief for the Centurions as it spelled an end to their five-game losing streak.

Delaney 'D.J.' Faus spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned runs on five hits. She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't given up more than two walks in 12 consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Cypress' win was truly a team effort as four different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Naya Taylor, who went 2-for-3 with one double and one RBI.

Meanwhile, Mayfair suffered their closest defeat since April 25, 2024 on Thursday. They fell just short of La Mirada by a score of 3-1.

Mayfair has also been struggling recently as they've lost three of their last four matches. That's put a noticeable dent in their 9-6 record this season. Those losses can't be blamed on the team's pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.8 runs on average over those games. As for Cypress, their victory was their first in the league, bumping their league record up to 1-3 and their overall record up to 11-6.

Cypress came out on top in a nail-biter against Mayfair in their previous meeting back in April of 2024, sneaking past 1-0. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Centurions since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
