Softball Game Preview: Newark Catholic Green Wave vs. Lakewood Lancers

Newark Catholic is 2-8 against Lakewood since April of 2016 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Friday. The Green Wave will head out to square off against the Lancers at 5:00 p.m. Newark Catholic has given up an average of 7.1 runs per game this season, but Friday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.

Utica hit Newark Catholic with a nine-run first inning on Thursday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. The Green Wave fell just short of the Redskins by a score of 16-15. Even if the Green Wave couldn't come away with the victory, the high-scoring effort was a great turnaround for their hitters, which had struggled int the games prior.

Avery Sullivan (2027) and Addi Gerber (2025) did some serious damage despite the final result: Sullivan (2027) went 2-for-3 with three runs, three RBI, and one double, while Gerber (2025) went 2-for-4 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. That home run marked the first that Gerber (2025) has launched this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Emma Lohri (2025), who went 4-for-6 with two RBI and one run.

Meanwhile, Lakewood suffered their closest loss since April 22, 2024 on Thursday. They fell just short of Highland by a score of 5-3.

Lakewood saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Anna Crist, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with one run and one double.

Newark Catholic is on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 4-7. As for Lakewood, their defeat dropped their record down to 14-2.

Newark Catholic suffered a grim 6-0 defeat to Lakewood in their previous matchup on April 7th. Can the Green Wave avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
