Preview: Mountain Empire Redhawks vs. San Diego Academy Cavaliers
Mountain Empire and San Diego Academy are an even 4-4 against one another since January of 2015, but not for long. The Mountain Empire Redhawks will head out on the road to take on the San Diego Academy Cavaliers at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Hopefully Mountain Empire focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 22 on Friday.
Mountain Empire suffered their biggest loss since December 5, 2023 on Friday. They were the victim of a rough 53-30 defeat at the hands of Bayfront Charter.
The loss doesn't tell the whole story though, as several players had good games. One of the most active was Andrew Sepulveda, who scored eight points along with 11 rebounds and four blocks. He has been hot recently, having posted eight or more rebounds the last three times he's played. Another player making a difference was Corey Vann, who scored 15 points along with seven rebounds and three blocks.
San Diego Academy posted their biggest victory yet this season on Thursday. They claimed a resounding 35-6 win over King-Chavez Community on the road. The win was familiar territory for San Diego Academy who now have three in a row.
San Diego Academy's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Dustin Jewell, who scored eight points.
Mountain Empire's loss dropped their record down to 10-6. As for San Diego Academy, their victory ended a four-game drought on the road and puts them at 5-6.
Keep an eye on the arc in Tuesday's contest: Mountain Empire have been dynamite from deep this season, having only made 30.3% of their threes per game. It's a different story for San Diego Academy, though, as they've only made 3.18% of their threes per game this season. Given Mountain Empire's sizeable advantage in that area, San Diego Academy will need to find a way to close that gap.
Mountain Empire came up short against San Diego Academy in their previous matchup back in February of 2018, falling 68-60. Can Mountain Empire avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
