Basketball Recap: Aztec Falls Despite Big Games from Jazzlyn Gomez and Bailey Clarence

It was a proper cat-fight when Aztec took on Piedra Vista on Tuesday. The Aztec Tigers lost to the Piedra Vista Panthers at home by a 58-44 margin. The Tigers have struggled against the Panthers recently, as the game was their ninth consecutive lost matchup.

Aztec's loss shouldn't obscure the performances of Bailey Clarence, who posted 11 points in addition to five rebounds and three blocks, and Jazzlyn Gomez, who earned nine points along with seven boards and five steals. Gomez has been hot for a while, having posted two or more steals the last 15 times she's played.

Piedra Vista got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Tyra Holyan out in front who went 7 of 11 en route to 16 points and four steals. What's more, Holyan also racked up three assists, the most she's had since back in February of 2024. Karen Stanley was another key player, going 5 for 9 on her way to 17 points.

Aztec's defeat dropped their record down to 7-6. As for Piedra Vista, they now have a winning record of 8-7.

Aztec didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next matchup, a 54-14 win against Menaul on the 16th. As for Piedra Vista, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next contest, a 70-40 loss against Kirtland Central on the 16th.
