Basketball Recap: Shelbie Walker Leads a Balanced Attack to Beat Hernando

On Monday, the Callaway Chargers had just enough and edged the Hernando Tigers out 57-55. The win almost wasn't to be: the Chargers were down 42-22 in the second quarter.

Callaway got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Shelbie Walker out in front who posted five points and ten rebounds. Walker is on a roll when it comes to rebounds, as she's now pulled down eight or more in the last three games she's played. Another player making a difference was Trinity Cook, who earned 11 points and seven rebounds.

Callaway was working as a unit and finished the game with 14 assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Hernando only posted seven assists.

When it comes to explaining why Hernando lost, don't look at Fran Kelly. Despite the final result, she went 11 of 20 on her way to 33 points and five steals. That was a full 60% of Hernando's points, marking the 12th time in a row she's had more than a third of the team's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Keristian Nevels, who put up five points.

Callaway is on a roll lately: they've won six of their last seven matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 10-2 record this season. Those victories came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 59.0 points per game. As for Hernando, their defeat ended a five-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 9-3.

Callaway wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next game, a 64-22 win against Port Gibson on the 17th. As for Hernando, a feisty cat fight will be fought when the Hernando Tigers face off against the DeSoto Central Jaguars at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday.
