Columbia proved they can win big last Friday (they won by 62) and on Friday they proved they can win the close ones too. They slipped by the Salem Wildcats 7-6. The final result isn't all that surprising considering the Eagles' considerable advantage in MaxPreps' Illinois football rankings (they are ranked 148th, while the Wildcats are ranked 313th).

Xavier Voegele threw for 65 yards on nine of 20 attempts. Ricky Prater was his top target, picking up 31 receiving yards. On the ground, Jase Nelson rushed for 52 yards and one score.

When it comes to explaining why Salem lost, don't look at Trey Clark. Despite the final result, he rushed for 137 yards and one touchdown. Clark showed off some serious burst, cutting through the defense on one rush that went for 50 yards.

Columbia's victory bumped their record up to 6-1. As for Salem, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 2-5.

Looking ahead, Columbia will host Breese Central at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The Eagles will need to watch out since the Cougars have now posted at least 31 points in their last four matchups. As for Salem, they will head out on the road to square off against Freeburg at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The Midgets will roll in looking for their fourth straight win, something the Wildcats surely won't give up without a fight.
