Softball Game Preview: Cox Falcons vs. Great Bridge Wildcats

The Cox Falcons will head out on the road to square off against the Great Bridge Wildcats at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. Cox is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.9 runs per game this season.

Thursday just wasn't the day for Cox's offense. They lost 9-0 to Ocean Lakes on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Great Bridge entered their tilt with Oscar Smith on Thursday with five consecutive wins, and they'll enter their next game with six. They were the clear victors by a 15-1 margin over the Tigers. Considering the Wildcats have won eight matches by more than six runs this season, Thursday's blowout was nothing new.

Jensyn Koonce looked comfortable as she pitched three innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than one walk in four consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Great Bridge got a massive performance out of Adelynn Palmer, who got on base in all four of her plate appearances with two runs, two doubles, and one RBI. Those two doubles gave Palmer a new career-high. Adyson Lease was another key player, going a perfect 2-for-2 with three runs, one double, and one RBI.

Great Bridge's win was their sixth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 14-3. The road victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 12.2 runs over those games. As for Cox, they have been struggling recently as they've lost three of their last four games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 10-6 record this season.

Cox might still be hurting after the 13-0 defeat they got from Great Bridge in their previous matchup back in April of 2022. Can the Falcons avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
