League recap: Hobbs gains ground in national rankings

Hobbs made the biggest jump in the national rankings this week, rising to 8,537 from 8,889. The advance stemmed from a 54-0 victory over the Eagles last week.

Carlsbad led 5A District 4 in scoring this week after putting up 41 points on Carlsbad.

The Cavemen's offense was tough to stop this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Rodney Holcomb threw for 249 and three touchdowns and Tyler Hyden had 130 yards receiving. On the ground Dillion Caddell chipped in 112 yards. Marcus Arrington helped Carlsbad's passing attack out by catching five balls for 55 yards.

Carlsbad's Holcomb and Hyden have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. Holcomb has thrown for 801 yards this season, while Hyden, a 6-foot-3 receiver, has 20 catches for 318 yards. Kamal Cass from Clovis leads the league in rushing with 521 yards.
