Baseball Recap: De Anza Takes a Loss

De Anza fought the good fight in their extra-innings game against Saint Mary on Thursday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Panthers by a score of 8-7. The Dons were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Panthers earlier this season, when they won 10-9.

Chad Oakley put in work no matter where he played. On the mound, he tossed five innings while giving up three earned runs off only two hits. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than two hits in three consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in four of his five plate appearances with two stolen bases and two runs.

In other batting news, Ty Willson made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and went 2-for-5 with one home run, five RBI, and one stolen base. He is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as he's now snagged at least one in each of the last five games he's played. Another player making a difference was Ian Garcia, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with one triple, one stolen base, and one run.

De Anza has been struggling recently as they've lost seven of their last eight matchups. That's put a noticeable dent in their 2-11-1 record this season. As for Saint Mary's, their victory ended a seven-game drought at home dating back to last season and bumped them up to 3-13.

De Anza and Saint Mary's could both be facing uphill battles in their next games considering their disadvantage in the MaxPreps California Rankings. The Dons will take on Maria Carrillo at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday with a big rank disadvantage (801 vs. 323). Meanwhile, Saint Mary's (ranked 858th) will meet Marin Catholic (ranked 274th) at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
