Mt. Vernon has gone a perfect 5-0 against Richland County recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Thursday. Mt. Vernon will look to defend their home field against Richland County at 4:30 p.m. Both come into the match bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Last Tuesday, Mt. Vernon made easy work of Herrin and carried off an 11-1 victory. The Rams haven't had any issues with the Tigers recently, as the game was their third consecutive win against them.
Danicah Tobin made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run while striking out 12 over six innings pitched. Tobin was also stellar in the batter's box, going 3-for-5 with four RBI, two runs, and one double. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in May of 2024.
In other batting news, Arwin Wilkey was incredible, scoring three runs and stealing a base while going 4-for-5. That's the most hits she has posted since back in May of 2024. Another player making a difference was Taylor DeSmith, who went 1-for-4 with one triple, one run, and one RBI.
Mt. Vernon always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .524. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Herrin only posted an OBP of .259.
Meanwhile, there's no place like home for Richland County, who bounced back after a loss on the road on Tuesday. They came out on top against Cumberland by a score of 9-6 on Wednesday.
Natalie Ochs looked comfortable as she pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than one walk any time she's pitched this season.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Clara Williams, who scored a run while going 3-for-4.
Richland County's victory bumped their record up to 3-1. As for Mt. Vernon, they now have a winning record of 2-1.
Thursday's game will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Mt. Vernon hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .398. However, it's not like Richland County struggles in that department as they've averaged .380. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Mt. Vernon came out on top in a nail-biter against Richland County when the teams last played back in March of 2024, sneaking past 3-2. Will Mt. Vernon repeat their success, or does Richland County has a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
