Softball Recap: Marina Comes Up Short

Marina extended their losing streak to three on Wednesday, dropping their season record down to 7-6 in the process. They were a single run away from ending the streak, but they lost a 10-9 heartbreaker at the hands of the Pajaro Valley Grizzlies. The Mariners were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Grizzlies earlier this season, when they won 20-8.

JAYLA NAVARRO and RO ALLEN stepped up to the plate in a big way. NAVARRO went 2-for-3 with four RBI, while ALLEN went 2-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI.

As for Pajaro Valley, their victory was their fourth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 7-10. The team dominated over that stretch too, winning by an average of 10.8 runs.

On Pajaro Valley's side, Hemeria Delatorre was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She struck out 14 batters over seven innings while giving up five earned (and four unearned) runs off eight hits. Those 14 strikeouts gave Delatorre a new career-high. She was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in four of her five plate appearances with two runs and two RBI.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Elena Barron, who went 2-for-4 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. That home run marked the first that she has launched this season. Another player making a difference was Jaqueline Alvarez Zavala, who went 2-for-3 with three RBI and one run.

Looking ahead, Marina will square off against Soledad at 4:30 p.m. on Friday. As for Pajaro Valley, they will take on Anzar at 4:30 p.m. on Friday. The Hawks have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 13.8 runs per game on average), something the Grizzlies will no doubt try to take advantage of.
