The Denison Yellow Jackets will face off against the Midland Bulldogs at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday. Denison is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.5 runs per game this season.
Denison's tournament run continued when they took on Sachse on Friday. Denison fell 9-5 to Sachse. The Yellow Jackets have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Hailey Shrum made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and fired off two home runs and three RBI while going 2-for-2. That's the most home runs she has posted since back in March of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Addison Ciaccio, who scored two runs and stole four bases while going 2-for-3.
Meanwhile, Midland came tearing into Friday's match with nine straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 8.6 runs), and they left with even more momentum. They came within a single run of losing the streak, but they secured a 4-3 W against the Chaparrals.
Bree Battenfelder was a major factor no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out six batters over four innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits (and not a single walk). The dominant performance also gave her a new career-low in walks (zero). She was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-3 with one home run.
Battenfelder wasn't the only one making solid contact as three players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Baylie Savage, who went 1-for-3 with one home run. Avrey Ochoa was another, going 1-for-3 with one triple, one run, and one RBI.
Denison's defeat dropped their record down to 7-5. As for Midland, their victory bumped their record up to 14-2.
Saturday's contest might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Denison has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .502. However, it's not like Midland struggles in that department as they've averaged .444. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Denison might still be hurting after the 10-4 loss they got from Midland in their previous meeting back in February of 2016. Can Denison avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
