High school volleyball rankings: Hamilton Southeastern jumps in MaxPreps Top 25 after wins over two ranked opponents

Mater Dei climbs to No. 2 after winning Nike TOC Southwest title.

Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) moved up to No. 2 in this week's MaxPreps Top 25 high school volleyball rankings after winning the Nike Tournament of Champions Southwest title with a sweep of No. 4 Marymount (Los Angeles, Calif.).

The victory flipped the script for Mater Dei after falling to Marymount a week earlier in the Durango Fall Classic semifinals as the Sailors went on to win the prestigious title.

Mater Dei's unbeaten run in Phoenix was more impressive considering they were without the services of leading hitter Westley Matavao, who was resting her shoulder.

MVP Layli Ostovar stepped up with 63 kills over the seven matches.

Like Mater Dei, No. 3 Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth, Calif.) got a bit of redemption Monday by beating Marymount 25-19, 24-26, 25-22, 25-27, 15-11 in the first of two league matches. The Trailblazers evened the season series after the Sailors beat them 2-1 nine days prior in the Durango Fall Classic championship.

No. 8 Hamilton Southeastern (Fishers, Ind.) is the biggest riser in this week's rankings, jumping 11 spots. The Royals are on an eight-match win streak which includes wins over No. 19 Benet Academy (Lisle, Ill.) and No. 21 Roncalli (Indianapolis) in the past week. Illinois commit Madison Miles (340 kills) and Ball State pledge Merritt Sliwa (248 kills) have powered the offense as the program looks for its third Class 4A state title in four years.

No. 1 Byron Nelson (Trophy Club, Texas) ran its win streak to 65 matches, the longest in the nation, with sweeps of Bell (Hurst) and Keller Central (Keller). Sweeps have become routine for the reigning MaxPreps National Champions, dropping just one set the entire season.

A showdown against Southlake Carroll (Southlake) today and an Oct. 14 meeting against Keller present the toughest tests over Byron Nelson's remaining seven regular-season matches.
