Softball Game Preview: Nixon Mustangs vs. Rio Grande City Rattlers

Nixon is 0-7 against Rio Grande City since March of 2017 but things could change on Tuesday. The Nixon Mustangs will be playing in front of their home fans against the Rio Grande City Rattlers at 6:00 p.m. Both teams are coming into the contest red-hot, with Nixon sitting on three straight wins and Rio Grande City on five.

Nixon's pitching crew heads into the matchup hoping to repeat the dominance they displayed on Friday. They put the hurt on Martin with a sharp 15-0 victory. With that win, the Mustangs brought their scoring average up to 6.3 runs per game.

Jimena Ibarra made a splash no matter where she played. On the mound, she struck out eight batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits (and not a single walk). What's more, she gave up only zero earned runs, the fewest she's had over her last eight games. She was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run and stealing Two bases. while going 1-for-2. That's the most stolen bases she has posted over her last 14 contests.

In other batting news, Nixon got a big performance out of Delaney Guevara, who scored three runs while getting on base in two of her three plate appearances. What's more, Guevara posted two RBI, the most she's had over her last 13 matches. Another player making a difference was Valeria Camarillo, who scored two runs and stole Two bases. while getting on base in both of her plate appearances.

Nixon was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .545. They are undefeated (5-0) when they post a batting average of .375 or better.

Meanwhile, everything went Rio Grande City's way against Juarez-Lincoln on Friday as Rio Grande City made off with a 16-3 victory. Considering the Rattlers have won eight games by more than six runs this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.

Rio Grande City's win bumped their record up to 8-3. As for Nixon, their victory bumped their record up to 9-7-1.

Nixon came up short against Rio Grande City in their previous matchup back in April of 2024, falling 4-1. Can Nixon avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
