The nation's No. 1 football team heading into the 2015 season, De La Salle (Concord, Calif.) is led offensively by two of California's most productive tailbacks last season.

Antoine Custer, a 5-foot-9, 190-pound incoming senior, rushed for 1,947 yards and scored 26 touchdowns, while Andrew Hernandez, a 5-9, 178-pound senior, rushed for 1,804 yards and 30 touchdowns.

Custer averaged 10.5 yards per carry and Hernandez 11.1.

"When (they see us) off the field people think we're just goof balls," Hernandez told a group of reporters at the USA Football/MaxPreps High School Football Media Day hosted by the 49ers at Levi's Stadium last week. "When we put pads on it's a whole different story."

Custer on Hernandez: "He's got great balance and speed. He hits the hole hard. When he's gone, he's gone. He's a great player."

The duo will lead the Spartans into Texas for the first time in a season-opener against perennial national power Trinity (Euless) Aug. 28 at Newsome Stadium in Mansfield, just outside of Dallas.

Hernandez said it was a privilege to be ranked No. 1 nationally by MaxPreps.

"But the rankings don't mean anything until you go out and prove it."
