League recap: Aransas Pass climbs in state rankings with win

Aransas Pass moved up to 483 from 529 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in 2A-1 Region IV District 16. The Panthers climbed the ranks as a result of besting Falfurrias 49-22.

San Diego extended the longest winning streak in the league this week by beating Santa Rosa, 48-25. The win marks eighth in a row for the the Vaqueros.

Odem's dynamic duo of Jake Ray and Aaron Naranjo proved tough for Mathis to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Ray threw for 51 yards and one touchdown and Naranjo had 35 yards receiving. Zach Morales helped Odem's passing attack out by catching one ball for 16 yards.

Luis Lopez was the most productive running back in the league this week. He ran for 220 yards on 29 carries as San Diego topped the Pirates. Eddie Garza also contributed to the rushing game with 104 yards on the ground.

San Diego's offense has been unstoppable this season and the Vaqueros feature the season leaders in passing, rushing and receiving yards. Michael Lichtenberger has thrown for 601 yards and six touchdowns this season, while Lucas Lopez has 10 catches for 236 yards. Lopez leads the league in rushing with 1927 yards.

The top two teams in the league will face off this week when first place San Diego takes on second place Aransas Pass. Bo Ochoa's team defeated the Warriors last week, while Aransas Pass beat the Bulls.

The top two defenses in the league will face off this season when the Vaqueros take on Russell Lee's team. San Diego has allowed 138 points this season, while the Panthers have given up 147. The Vaqueros allowed 25 points last week as they topped Santa Rosa.
