Preview: South Gwinnett Comets vs. Brookwood Broncos
The South Gwinnett Comets will be playing in front of their home fans against the Brookwood Broncos at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Brookwood took a loss in their last game and will be looking to turn the tables on South Gwinnett, who comes in off a win.
South Gwinnett had to endure a four-game losing streak, but that streak is no more. They skirted past Newton 31-28. The win was all the more spectacular given South Gwinnett's disadvantage in MaxPreps' Georgia football rankings (they are ranked 52nd, while Newton is ranked eighth).
South Gwinnett can attribute much of their success to Jared Echols, who threw for 230 yards and a touchdown while picking up 11.0 yards per attempt. Xavier Butler and his 105 yards on the ground were also a key factor in South Gwinnett's win.
Meanwhile, Brookwood's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Friday after their fourth straight loss. They lost to Parkview at home by a decisive 43-24 margin.
Despite the loss, Brookwood saw an underclassman step up: Brayden Tyson rushed for 149 yards and a touchdown while picking up 8.8 yards per carry. Tyson was no stranger to the big play, turning on the jets for a run that went for 52 yards. Another player making a difference was Cameron French, who rushed for 68 yards and two touchdowns.
South Gwinnett now has a winning record of 5-4. As for Brookwood, their defeat was their third straight at home, which dropped their overall record down to 3-6.
South Gwinnett came up short against Brookwood in their previous meeting back in November of 2022, falling 33-27. Thankfully for South Gwinnett, Jumal Prothro (who rushed for 163 yards and two touchdowns while picking up 9.6 yards per carry) won't be suiting up this time. Will that be enough to change the final result? There's only one way to find out.
