Basketball Game Preview: Deer Trail Eagles vs. Burlington Cougars

Deer Trail hasn't had much luck against Burlington recently, but that could start to change on Thursday. The Deer Trail Eagles will head out to square off against the Burlington Cougars at 4:30 p.m. Both teams took a loss in their last game, so they'll have plenty of motivation to get the 'W'.

Deer Trail is headed into Thursday's matchup looking for a big change in momentum after dropping their 27th straight game dating back to last season on Tuesday. They took a blow against Pikes Peak Christian, falling 67-20. Deer Trail was in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 41-5.

Even though the team lost, they still had their share of impressive performances. One of the best came from Chauncy Gudenkauf, who posted 11 points. That was a full 55% of Deer Trail's points, marking the 11th time in a row Gudenkauf has scored more than a third of the team's points.

Meanwhile, Burlington was not able to break out of their rough patch on Saturday as the team picked up their fourth straight loss. They fell 56-45 to Sedgwick County. While losing is never fun, Burlington can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Colorado basketball rankings (they are ranked 232nd, while Sedgwick County is ranked 115th).

Deer Trail will have to contain Adan Lopez-Mitchell as he made an impact in Burlington's last game. He went 7-for-15 en route to 18 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Rowdy Humrich, who put up seven points and eight rebounds.

Deer Trail's record now sits at 0-19. As for Burlington, their record now sits at 5-12.

Deer Trail was dealt a bruising 73-27 defeat at the hands of Burlington when the teams last played back in February of 2024. Thankfully for Deer Trail, Keziah Williams (who almost dropped a double-double with 22 points and nine steals) won't be suiting up this time. Will that be enough to change the final result?
