The Montour Spartans will face off against the Central Catholic Vikings at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Montour is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7 runs per game this season.
Montour came out on top against Ellwood City on Monday thanks in part to the team's impressive eight-run first inning. The Spartans blew past the Wolverine 11-1. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Spartans.
Cyprian Slifkey looked comfortable as he pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one hit in four consecutive appearances.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Matteo Weber, who went 2-for-3 with three runs and one stolen base. He is becoming a predictor of Montour's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is undefeated (and 5-7 when he doesn't). Zachary Ciamacco was another key player, getting on base in two of his three plate appearances with two stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI.
Montour always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .516. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Ellwood City only posted an OBP of .350.
Central Catholic had taken Taylor Allderdice down for three straight games at home, but that winning streak came to an end on Tuesday. The Vikings fell 6-1 to the Dragons.
Josh McFadden was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: he pitched five innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off three hits.
Central Catholic has also traveled a rocky road recently, having lost ten of their last 11 contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 5-12 record this season. As for Montour, their win bumped their record up to 11-7.
Central Catholic's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Montour hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .317. It's a different story for Central Catholic, though, as they've only averaged .253. Will they be able to contain Montour's hitters?
Montour couldn't quite finish off Central Catholic in their previous meeting back in March of 2021 and fell 9-7. Can the Spartans avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
